So this is my first "real" year of consistent income. i work in entertainment - specifically in production and i was wondering if i should do my taxes myself (as i always do) or if i will get a higher refund if i use something like h&r block. i live in ny if that means anything. my question: how much roughly would i get back and is it better to go through h&r? first part of the year: i started the year on unemployment using about $4,000 in 4 months (didn't choose to have tax taken) next few months- full time at $600 p/w after taxes $460 the ytd total at the end of the gig was $7080 fed 649.92 res st 267.85 rs city ny 14.30 total withheld (with fica) 1,480.89 i started this next job towards the end of the last one and worked them together. then continued this full time. total as of dec 21st(last of the year) - i was paid $2,000 every 2 weeks after tax $1485 totaling $20,900 at the end of the year. fit - 2,089 sit- 940.04 sdi- 15.00 city tax- 564.56 deductions etc in 2009 i relocated across the country for work i paid my airfare and travel costs = $400 i paid rent while there = $1200 for two months i donated to charity (items with receipts) = $500 i also moved within my hometown when i came back then for the duration of the year (3 months) i worked from home using my own computer i also had a few hundred dollars in medical costs (think 2 or 3)
