I have some negative accounts on my credit reports. i have paid off a few of them in the past few months, but i havent noticed any change to my credit scores. is it better to pay these off, or just live with crappy credit until they fall off my report eventually? does anyone know if paying them off affects my scores at all? the only thing it does is show closed account.

Paying them off in full will not necessarily increase your scores. It will however show potential lenders exactly that....that the debt is satisfied and paid in full . You're doing right by paying off the adverse accounts. What you may want to do on the outstanding debts, is offer a "pay for delete" agreement (search this term on Yahoo Answers), in which you pay the full amount (or a reduced amount that you offer in writing), and in return, the collector deletes the negative entry entirely. This would end up raising your score, because the debt no longer appears on any trade lines. If you're looking for a score boost, it isn't going to happen simply by paying off collectors. You need to pay your bills on time, and create a trend of financial worthiness with your current creditors you have, THIS will raise your score. It takes some time....not something that happens overnight. It certainly takes hardly any time for a negative item to drop your score, but it takes a while to bring it back up. Any lender than is personally reviewing your credit report, will think more favorably by seeing debts on your report, as paid. These would typically be insurance underwriters, employers, mortgage lenders, and auto finance companies....all are the most common to personally review credit reports. You're on the right track....just try to get an agreement with the collectors now, to DELETE the entries entirely when you pay off the debts.

I found something on my credit report for an old phone bill. it is with the collection agency aac. how do i find this company to settle my debt?

Do NOT pay them off unless you get a written agreement from the collection agency AND the phone company that they will remove the delinquency from all three of your credit reports . The collection agencies will gladly take your money. However, the phone company has already written off the loss as noncollectable and won't remove the credit blemish.

A few deliquent accounts were set to stop being reported to my credit report early this year. i haven't checked yet, but i have been received credit card offers and one of them mentioned somethign about congratulations on my dilligence in my improved credit. just a coincidence?

nope your score goes up when either you pay your bills or the creditors stop reporting either way congratulations , and stay out of the red!!!!!!

I work for a psychotherapst in a private practice. we have several accounts (the patients of course no longer come for sessions) with past due balances in the thousands of dollars. i am interested to know how, or even if, small businesses can report pass due accounts to the three companies that provide credit scores and reports? i am aware that there may be some issues of breech of confidentiality by releasing the info, so will not proceed until i have addressed them, but would like to know if reporting them to the agencies is even possible for small companies. thanks so much.

WEll to my knowledge . Yes you can you have to look into it more contact the agencies. I worked for a small practice as well and it wouldnt be that long before I would send the account to collections. Def, the owner didnt play at all. Like she wouldnt allow the acount to go to thousands of dollars before sending the account out. Im not particularly sure about the details but for the software accounitng books I used it was just a matter of sending them to collections. Which there account would not be in my active patients anymore the whole account would go to a select group and then id say she would turn those accounts over the the credit bureau and what not. Just curious as to if paying my cell phone on time for a year counts at all. or do they just report deliquent accounts?

Rent, utilities, cell phones, insurance,and similar bills are not extensions of credit and are not reported to the credit bureau unless you default on the debt and it's sold to a collection agency. The collection agency reports the debt to the credit bureaus.

This was not reported on any report before now. they say it was. i have some copies of reports from 2002 - up until now

If it was paid 3 years ago, and they are trying to scam the money out of you again now, then fight it of course. Take it to your lawyer right away. If you have proof of payment, you can get them for defamation of character and ruining your credit.

If i pay off a delinquent credit card account, how long does it stay on my credit report? and how long do credit inquiries stay on you report?

I believe credit reports are cleared after 7 years. However your credit score changes fairly often and this is what they tend to look at. By paying off the card you can improve your score, which i s good. Often paying it off bit by bit may actually be better than all at once if consistent. Call the card company and ask them what pay off programs they have. Often they will match what you pay up to a certain amount (free $$) or they will lower your interest rate and take away late charges if you agree to a smaller payment monthly automatically withdrawn. There are, of course many different options but you first need to open a line of communication w/ the company and then stay on track. Hope this helps cause I've been there and done that. Oh yeah, whatever you do, don't apply for cards just to get free stuff, this includes candy or soda while walking through the local mall. The credit inquiry it generates isn't worth it. Even w/ good credit scores, too many inquiries in a short period will "freeze your credit and may cost you that important loan (like house or car) you want. I don't care how much you got the "munchies", it's not worth a house!

Long story short, we had our house foreclosed on in january of 2007. we never filed bankruptcy. how long wil that stay on our credit report? we also have many deliquent accounts from credit cards, and one auto repo all going bad around january 2007. also, how can we rebuild our credit if we dont file bankruptcy?

Repairing your credit in a situation like this will take time. You may want to try to resolve the outstanding debt you have such as credit card debts and the deficiency balance. This may be your first step to putting yourself on the path of repairing your credit. If you file bankruptcy it may be a much more severe negative impact to your credit than handling it yourself. If you are considering bankruptcy you should speak with a licensed bankruptcy attorney in your state. Federal law (US Code Title 15, §1681c) controls the behavior of credit reporting agencies. This law is known as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). Under FCRA §605 (a) and (b), an account in collection will appear on a consumer's credit report for 7.5 years. The clock starts approximately 180 days after the date of first delinquency on the account. To learn when an account will be removed by the credit reporting agencies (TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian and others), add 7.5 years to the date of first delinquency. Subsequent activity, such as resolving the debt, is irrelevant to the seven-year rule. However, if the debt is a tax lien, that can appear for seven years from the date of payment. A bankruptcy will appear for ten years from the date of the final order. Delinquent federal student loans can be reported indefinitely, i.e., for as long as they are delinquent. Just because a debt is removed from a credit report does not mean the statute of limitations for receiving a judgment to collect the debt has passed. Federal credit report laws and a state statute of limitations laws are separate and independent from each other. The 7.5 years starts running from the date of first delinquency, which generally means seven and a half years from the date of last payment. Review your credit report carefully to make sure the date of first delinquency being reported on these accounts are correct. The law stating that derogatory items must be removed from credit reports after seven years is designed to help consumers recover from past credit mistakes and help them rebuild their credit rating. If you find charged-off accounts appearing on your credit report after seven years, you may want to dispute the incorrect listings with the credit bureaus. Some creditors, especially debt purchasing firms, will report inaccurate charge-off dates to extend the amount of time an old account appears on your credit report. If you find any inaccurate information, you should dispute the credit report listing with the bureau in question. See the Federal Trade Commission document How to Dispute Credit Report Errors for more information. The seven-year rule only applies to derogatory items, not to accounts that you are keeping current, or which you closed in good standing. As long as an account is not considered derogatory, it can remain on your credit report indefinitely. Say that you have some closed accounts with balances and are still making payments on them. does that look bad on your credit report and does it affect your score. i am not talking about deliquent accounts which i know are bad, but closed accounts with balances. thanks

If you closed the account because you don't intend to use it again, no it does not look bad at all. In fact, it helps your credit score if you close accounts that you do not need, therefore shutting down lines of credit that can bring your score down. If the lender closed your account, that's another story. But from the tone of your question, I don't believe that to be the case.

I have a couple of deliquent accts that still appear on my credit report (they are all paid in full), but at this point i would like to have them removed. i know there are ways of going about this...what are some of the most effective ways of going about getting those deliquent accounts removed from my credit report w/o having to wait the 7 year period?
