Although we occasionally sell rings to the US I would not be able to say what the average size in the US is. All I know is that bigger is more, apparently the size of the stones shows how serious the man is which is clearly ridiculous. I really would not be able to say, sorry.

My diamond is 1.5 carats. The setting is another 0.4 carats. I would say the "average" is 0.75-1.0 It seems that everyone is getting larger and larger diamonds all the time! The most important is to get a solitare you can afford that has a good balance between the 4 C's(clarity color cut carat) Pay close attention to the cut, many diamonds are cut poorly to increase their carat weight, but that weight exists below where you cant see it. You could get a 1.5 carat and a 2.0 carat that look the same, because the 2.0 carat is cut poorly and has hidden weight. Check out the website where he bought mine.

Im looking int engagement rings and i have no idea what im looking for. we have talked and she wants something that is simple and elegant so im going with a white gold band with a single diamond. but what size diamond? i guess what im getting at is what is the average carrot size for an engagement ring?

It's really impossible to answer this. Not just because everyone has different tastes, but because any "averages" you might be able to hunt up will be provided by industry organizations. That means the jewelry stores that belong to the organizations will have reported the sizes of what they market as engagement rings, and then the organization will have spit out the mean like it, well, means something. But it doesn't. Because not only is a mean really useless (you can have a lot of small diamonds averaged in with a few whoppers and get a really inaccurate picture from that), but the "average" itself won't take into account a whole, whole lot of engagement rings that aren't sold as such. Say the jewelry store has their expensive diamond rings labeled "engagement rings" and their less expensive rings labeled "promise rings." Maybe they sell more promise rings than anything else, and maybe they sell those promise rings to men intending to propose with them. But those rings won't be averaged into the mean, because the industry organization only wants to hear about the "engagement" rings. Why is this? Why, to skew the mean figure upward and make you think you're supposed to be buying a larger diamond than most people really buy. The best thing to do is to ask your girlfriend to show you some pictures of rings she likes. Then you'll get an idea of the kind of stone she wants and how large she's hoping it will be. And if it's doable, great. If it's not, you guys can have a talk and try to merge her expectations with your financial reality.

It's a known fact that women in the u.s.a's standard engagement ring bought for them, ranges from around half a carat to 1ct diamond. now why is it that an average engagement ring bought for women in the u.k is around a quarter of a carat diamond? can anyone shed some light on this for me?

I think something which plays a large role (apart from the marketing) is the style of the cut. In the UK the most popular choice by far is the brilliant cut diamond, which gives arguably the greatest bang for your buck (table size/cost). The US tends to fluctuate more in terms of the styles which means the cuts such as the emerald cut are going to need to be bigger. My fiance did not want to have a big diamond as she only has small hands (perhaps the average hand size in america is bigger :) ). I personallty think quality is better than quantity and bought a .75 ct D Flawless diamond. If you are worried i suggest you talk to your partner and see what they are interested. Some will rather show of and as such go for a HUGE rock....if they are more interested in the purity and rarity then get the best quality. The way I always look at it is this: I bought the best possible quality and best clarity diamond availible, no one is going to come along with one thats better in that respect (they can only match it). If you go for size then there are always going to be rings that come along that are bigger unless you have millions to spend.

From talking to my jeweler and other jewelers in my area (everywhere from malls to Harry Winston) the average person has less than one carat in a solitaire ring and 1-1.5 carats total weight on an engagement ring with side stones. For example if you go to Zales' website and see how the diamonds are classified by weight, there are hardly any over 1 carat. A 2 carat ring, high quality (Cartier) will set you back at least $30,000. At the mall, you might find a lower quality ring for as little as $7000. Most people don't know a lot about size though, people assume all the time that my ring is over a carat and it's only 61 points (0.6 carats).

Just out of curiosity what is the average carat weight of a diamond engagement ring in 2008 does anyone know for florida?

0.5 ct, would be my guess... a guy with little money will try to get as close to the as possbile. Guys that had money saved up, try to get as higher than that as possible. Guys with money to spare got for 1.5-2 ct or more! ADD- I'm from Florida... My man got me a .86ct solitaire... My friend's guy set a budget and let her pick her own... She got a 2ct solitaire... If is't a multiple stone ring, the center stone as close to (or over) 0.5 ct as possible, and the Total Carat Weight is usually close to 1.25-1.5 tcw

I dont think there is an avarage price. There are dozens of different shapes sizes, levels of quality, and stores to buy them from in all shapes sizes and qualities. There are as many kinds of dimonds as there are stars in the sky. You can spend as little as 100 bucks, or as much as several million. There is no such thing as an avarage price.

The size of the diamond is only one part of a good purchase. The general rule of thumb is that you spend 3 months of your salary on the engagement (whatever that may be.) So the value of the ring is relative to your income. Please...don't get a large, but poor quality diamond. Diamonds have 4 C's: Carots (size), Colour, Clarity, and Cut. Each diamond you look at will have specific ratings for each C. Do some research on diamonds before making your special purchase. Good luck!
