What would be the average cost of living per month in $ for a family of three (daughter is 6) living in a modest apartment, being sensible about spending regarding food, clothing etc? do most ex pats send their kids to a private school or do some send their kids to public schools? is public transport cheap and reliable? please give us lots of info.

I'm an ex pat living in Chile for about four years now. I'm not here with a family but I think I can give you a fairly reasonable idea of the cost of living, transportation, etc. A modest apartment here (in the capital city Santiago) will run you about $400-$500 USD a month. With a little patience and perserverance you may find one for even less. Depending on the area the price can vary considerably. You want something in a safe area and close to transportation. It's advisable to choose an apartment building with a concierge desk at the entrance. They are much safer from home invasion, which is one of the most common problems here. As for food costs, as a single person, I can get eat VERY well for $80, that would include paper products, cleaning supplies and food. If I am feeling frugal I can still manage quite well for about half that. If you don't mind shopping in a non-traditional manner, there is a place called la Vega where you can spend about half of what you would in the supermarket. It's a type of crowded, open market, but the deals are wonderful and the fruits and vegetables the freshest you will ever find. Some areas also have a local "feria" (like a flea market) one day a week that is similar to la Vega but on a smaller scale. Clothing can be found dirt cheap if you know where to shop for it. There is an area called Patronato and it is street after street of nothing but clothing for sale. For example, you can find a blouse for less than $4 or $5, pants and skirts too. A word of advice here, if you are a woman that wears larger size clothing or especially larger size shoes, it is very difficult to find anything of decent quality to buy. If your shoe size is more than an 8 or 9 in US sizes, you may want to bring a few pairs from home with you. Large size men don't seem to face that issue as much here for some reason. Schools... now this will be one of the biggest adjustments for you. The education system is very different here. You will definitely want to shop around for a good school. Normally the private schools are best but there are some public ones that will do just fine too. All children are required to wear uniforms to school and that expense comes out of your pocket, as well as the cost of any books and school supplies. I do not have children but I can put you in touch with a group of ex pats that do and who will better address this issue for you. Public transportation.... aye, there's the rub. The now infamous Transantiago is the public transportation system down here. It was a good idea gone very wrong. It has been a thorn in the side of the government since it began due to very poor implementation of the new transportation plan. Reliable? Yes, mostly. Cheap? Compared to other places, I think so. Easy to use? Once you get familiar with it. It's about 75 cents to take the bus or use the subway (called the Metro). The metro is just slightly more at rush hour but not much. Using the Transantiago system at rush hour is very much like being crammed into an overstocked cattle car and about as comfortable. Taxis are considerably more than the bus or Metro, but still not an unreasonable form of transportation if you need to get somewhere. Keep in mind that all of this information applies to life in Santiago. Things are very different outside the capital city. I have posted a link below to a Yahoo group called Chilegringo's. I have just been reading all the finance news over the last few weeks and it is looking grim even with the rescue packages in place. i would say that the state of things world wide is in financial decline, a depression in other words. for those of us though who have no real money or investments to lose our worry is just getting by and living another day. we have seen an increase in fuel costs this year that has trebled gas bills and doubled electricity bills. even water rates have gone up this year and what with the weather the way it has been next year will see this rise again along with all the usual insurance costs. for single people on benefits these folk suffer and struggle the most as the average cost of living for someone in this predicament is really scary to say the least. unemployment benefit at the moment is 60.50 sixty pounds and fifty pence a week.. the only way someone can manage on this is if three or four share a flat otherwise a single person on there own can already account for at least 190 a hundred and ninety pounds of their benefit with no food, no transport costs for buses no clothes, no shoes, no rainy day fund certainly no insurance policies etc and absolutely nothing in the pocket. if an unemployed person has savings or a fiddle job than they are taking a risk but i can also guarantee that whatever little bit extra they can raise will go on the cost of living. the remaining amount left is 32 .00 thirty two pounds if an individual has no savings or extra income for food for a whole month. you can figure it out gas at around 80+, electricity around 30+, water rates around 22-24, landline phone around 20 twenty pounds a month, an internet connection around 12.00 twelve pounds a month, a mobile phone voucher for emergency use only 10. 00 ten pounds a month, and television license 22 .00 pounds a month on a payment scheme. so if this was you could you manage your entire food bill on 32.00 yes i did say thrity two pounds a month. my own food bill and i am single over the space of a year has gone up from 25/26.00 twenty five twenty six pounds a week to around 33/34.00 thrity three to thirty four pounds and i would say i don't live on the most expensive foods, i don't have a high standard of living but i do know that like fuel bills the cost of the weekly shop has escalated. for a family the weekly shop must have escalated to the point where economies have to be made as what with the credit curnch, and rising costs everything is way out of control. so if you had to could you cut your food bill, and cut your waste? is it cheaper to live off fresh foods and cook or is covenience foods still the cheapest way to shop and feed your family? list all the things you could save money on here. here are two from me. cut out that holiday costing a thousand pounds. save on fuel bills and don't leave electrical goods on standby. there must be loads more..............

we can do it in 45 and there is 3 of us and two cats, we grow our own fruit and veg and so this kind of helps

I was wondering how much the average cost would be for someone to hang a microwave oven under the cabinet and three curtain rods one mirror two pictures light weight and rehang two brackets for a rod..... like clothing rod ?????? and it took like four hours to do it /?? ?? ohhh yea and five small wall vases ..... besides the fact that ; it is a family / friend that we did daycare for as well so not like we are strangers or have bad feelings so 'oooo i dont know if this is fair and how ::: ..... to feel about it ??/ should i say something ? should i just pay it and lesson learned? and one of the things that was done is not right :: do to misunderstanding or communication !! but still needs redone!!! i don't know how to approach this and really do appreciate having it done !! uuuuuuugggggggggg , aaaaahhhhhh , uuuuuuurrrrrrrrrgggg someone help ::::

Offer him $20 an hour or maybe make him a nice dinner. If your really greatful, then show your appreciation on your knees. Sounds fair to me.

I am a guy..i have a lot more girl friends than guy friends and i hang out with girls more than guys..my girl friends always come to me when they have problems or if they have something they want to talk about..thye tell me everything..i go with them to get their nails done (i don't get mine done) and talk to them there..on an average day the clothes i wear probably cost a total of $200-$300..i wear flip flops i have like three different pair and like 5 different pairs of shoes..the flip flops cost more than $20 and the cheapest pair of shoes i have is $80 and the most expensive is $120..i play the violin..lol..i am the best cook in my family..and more than half of my friends say that i am gay..but i like girls..i know i do..i have been dating one for about 5 months now and i am very happy..ok i am not spoiled i have to pay for all of my clothes my self with my money..i like wearing a shirt and tie more than anything..not with the tie all the way up...i like the more relaxed look...

i dont think you sound gay at all! and the people who tell you you are are just mean. i think you sound like a nice guy. i sure wish more guys were like you. i think you would be alot of fun to date. most guys dont like to go shopping. so it gets boring because you know the guy is bored. with you it would be the best date ever! besides i like a guy who is alittle bit more girly if you will.

nothing you have mentioned makes you gay - its good that you are comfortable being friends with lots of females, and the fact that you like nice clothes means you like nice clothes, nothing more.... I have male friends that are comfortable doing all the things you mention and I can assure you they are quite happily hetro - but I have some very butch male gay friends as well, and they are all happy being who they are.
