I'm looking for a good overview of macroeconomic events that have shaped europe since about 1970 (switching to the euro, for example). specifically i'm looking for events that would have affected nordic countries like finland, but events that would have affected europe in general are very helpful. i appreciate any help you can offer, or any directions that you can point me in.

I would wait until the summer. The Euro is way overdue for a bounce here, but probably a lot more pain before the decline bottoms. To buy here would be a short-term trade, not an investment. Or maybe buy half of what you need now, and the rest before you go.

I'm thinking about purchasing some foreign goods from europe (i live in the usa), but i am undecided whether now or this fall would be the best time to buy them. currently, the euro is worth about $1.23, do you feel it will strengthen or weaken against the us dollar by the fall months (september, october, etc.)? the euro has gone down by about 30 cents over the past year, but do you think that trend will continue? i obviously know there is no way to predict this, but i would appreciate anything that anyone who has a deep understanding of economics, investing, and currencies could provide me. thanks for your help!

I think you already answered your own question. The markets defy logic, and anyone can build a case for either direction. The future is more uncertain now than I can remember. I am long-term bearish, medium-term bullish, and the short-term just befuddled everything today. With the stock markets down and more bad news out of Europe, you would have thought the EUR/USD would have been down today, but it wasn't. Hard to tell what that means. You aren't interested in short-term anyway, but it's a day-to-day thing right now as we await the next astonishing headline or next gov't intervention or bailout or changing of the rules. How can you possibly put an accurate value on anything, whether it be a stock, currency, or ounce of gold? The rules are constantly changing and the books are cooked. I don't see where they've fixed anything yet in Europe. Like the US, they create more debt to fix a debt problem and expect the consumer or the private sector to fill the gap and step up to the plate; they're both reeling. That isn't happening and isn't going to happen with steep austerity measures being taken. The entire French nation went on strike today. Hmm, we need to fix this and here's the solution, but the people riot in the streets in Greece and Spain, and march in France. Contagion - who knew what that meant a year ago? It took years to get into this world financial mess, and it will take years to straighten out. The risk of a rebound in the Eurozone economy and an extended rally through this year in the EUR/USD is small. But it could easily retrace half of the recent decline from 1.52 last October to 1.19 on June 7th, and rally to 1.34 (50% retracement) and still be in an overall long-term downtrend. The Euro will probably decline to retest the June low of 1.19 within the next couple of months. and could easily go to parity. But if a rally to 1.34 is unbearable, I would hedge myself and simply purchase half of the Euros needed now, and wait with the rest for the decline to resume. If it does go below 1.19, I would not let it get back above that level without purchasing Euros. If you ask 10 different people, you'll get 10 different answers. The future is always, always uncertain. The best you can do is plan for that uncertainty.

I want to backpack through various parts of europe. with the dollar lower than the euro, is it a good idea to exchange now in case the dollar falls lower against the euro in the future or should i hang on to my money and exchange it only when i travel. i am considering the uk (pound) and also croatia (hrk) in addition to places where the euro is used. i am hoping to travel sometime this year. any and all opinions are welcome. also travel tips if you have done this in the past are greatly appreciated. thanks!

The best bet is to keep your money in the bank! Use an ATM card when you feel you need the money. It saves on carrying travellers checks around and worrying if you'll lose it or something. But it all depends on where you think you will be. Xchange Pounds if you are going to be in the UK. But If you carry Pounds and when you go to Europe, you have ultimately xchanged twice. From US$ to Pounds, and then when you xchange it in Europe, to Euro. If you keep $ as is, then use the ATM to withdraw what you need. If you have a creditcard, that is good too. No need to exchange in advance. I use the ATM all the time.

Hey, i'm trying to plan for my summer in europe and i want the best experience possible. i want to be able to meet tons of new people, see a lot europe and explore the cultures. but having a hard time figuring if i would have a better experience backpacking sleeping in hostels with a euro rail ass oooor maybe finding work as an au pair in maybe the netherlands or spain then travel in my time off. any insight would be greatly appreciated

@ conely: While that's definitely true in some countries, that's not true in all. In most of Scandinavia, for example, it's mandated by law that au pairs have two days off in a row. Many countries in Europe have rather strict labor laws now when it comes to au pairs due to the abuse that was rampant for so long. At any rate, it's all in a contract before anyone steps on a plane, so the OP will know what they are in for.

I'd simply try and restate the historical info as the thesis and then use some of the documents to flesh out your first paragraph. I have done this before and have often gotten many strong marks for the way I write the thesis. So, something like this for an intro possibly... Nearly half of Europe's population during the years 1450-1700 lived at a subsistence level, as evidenced by historical documents from Catholic priests, emperors, and wealthy merchants. Then I would add several sentences exploring the documents you've been given-setting up the organization of the next few paragraphs of your essay. I can't say I miss those DBQs, but good luck...
