Can you get a crack inside of a diamond when installing it into a ring? when they are installing a diamond on the ring, can you get a crack or break inside the diamond? when we purchased the diamond there was no visible cracks inside the diamond. after installation when we got the ring, we saw a visible crack which could be easily seen with the naked eye. could anything have happened to the diamond when they made it into a ring? do they use a torch or something?

A diamond can crack if hit hard enough. It sounds strange and I wonder if your original diamond may have been enhanced to conceal some flaws. A question for you, are you sure its the same diamond ? Check with your and the jeweler's insurance.

Nope. The bullet's position on the Moh's hardness scale is half the diamond's position. Diamonds are the highest on the Moh's hardness scale.

It is one of the diamonds on the side. there appears to be a dark line running down the middle, about half way. there is also a small darker spot on the side near the setting. i thought maybe it was a reflection, but wouldn't it be on the other side too? what can be done? took everyone's answers into consideration, will do. thanks for the help

Nothing can be done. It's not a crack it's a feather....it just means the clarity on that diamond isn't very good . It's a natural flaw and you will find them in all diamonds except Flawless ones. The smaller dark spot is carbon, everything see in the diamond is normal. Insurance won't do anything...it's just the characteristics of the diamonds. If you purchase anything with the clarity of VS1 or better, you won't see anything flaws to the naked eye. So I'm guessing your diamond is an SI1 or lower in clarity...if that has much carbon and feathers as your seeing than it's most likely an I1 or I2. I keep seeing what looks like a fracture in the stone if i turn it to a certain light. just wondering if it was something i could have done to crack the stone.

If its a real diamond, its an inclusion...which means its a very poor quality rock since you can see it with the naked eye. Inclusions occur when surrounding minerals get stuck in the diamond when it is initially created. If it is a real diamond, it would have came with a diamond certification report signed by the gemstone society listing all of your diamond's information (cut, color, clarity, and carat size) It will also have finish, symmetry, and dimensions of the diamond, etc. Find this sheet and look at the clarity rating. A rating of SI1-I3 would explain the highly visible inclusions. If there is no diamond certification paper, it is not a real diamond!

When shopping for engagement rings, if the diamond has an internal flaw - enough to make it si 1 or si2 clarity - can that inclusion or crack grow as time passes?

yes, under extreme heat or pressure, or if hit at just the right angle, an internal flaw may grow or become more noticeable. This is more likely in I clarity stones then SI, because of the nature of the flaws found in I clarities....

I have a 3 stone, diamond engagement ring. large stone in the middle with slightly smaller diamonds on each side. they are 4 prong so the sides of the diamonds touch each other. i smashed my hand against the shower door, i was trying to save the soap from falling. well now i have a "hairline crack" extending from the side of the large diamond into the middle. it is still one piece but it looks like a hairline crack. what can i do? will it stay together, do i have to replace it? since my diamonds touch each other i think it was the combination of me hitting the door and the two diamonds poitentially hitting each other? maybe they were loose? i know diamond can crack diamond. it also is a real diamond, we bought it together at kay jewelers. its funny how people comment when they have no idea what they are talking about

Hell no. A real diamond is so much harder than you think. Coal miners and the like actually use diamond tipped tools to work with. Its very strong so i really doubt that what you had was real. Another way to tell is to try to scratch glass with it. If the glass is scratched then its real, if the "diamond" is scratched then its fake.

My fiance purchased my engagement from the walmart jewelry department a few years ago. they only repair jewelry for free for the first year. it is a princess cut diamond with 2 small baguettes on both sides. one of the baguettes is cracked. the lady at the store estimated on the phone that it should only cost $50 to fix. how can that be? i would think they would have to replace the diamond. are they able to save the cracked diamond somehow? or is this going to cost more? the price of the ring was about $800 and it is 3/4 ct. help!!

If the baguettes are small the cost of one would be around $50-100.

Nuke missle hits the diamond??? just curious

If a nuke hits diamond, it's vapor. No two ways about it Diamonds are the hardest material known to science, aside from certain nanomaterials. This means that no knife can cut it unless it hits in the proper place to apply enough stress to crack it. This does NOT mean said material is invincible. Nothing held together by chemical bonds (every material in the world, for example) can hold up to the kinetic and thermal energy released by an RPG blast. Similarly, nothing held together by chemical bonds can survive a nuke without being completely and utterly destroyed, such that it becomes impossible to determine what it even was in the first place.
