I wish to buy from gumtree.com and i have been talking to a person who seems legit. he has sent me his bank details e.g sort code / account number / name etc. he has told me to go to lloyds tsb and deposit the money into that account and i will receive my item within a day or two. the question is ... if the item doesn't turn up could i go to the police and get my money back (because i have all his details) ??? does the average scamer use bank transfer and tricks such as this or does this seem legit ?

Get you item first or else you are dumber than dumb. YOu might have his information but if you went there you would not be able to find or identify him because he has no personal association to that account, Its a Scam.
