anything less than 1/3 is too small. if she complains, it makes sense to buy her a ring that she wants that fits your budget. there is no point on spending a lot on an engagement ring that she doesn`t like and that she may probably be stuck with for the rest of her life.

I have small hands, and my ring size is a 4 for thin ring and 4 1/2 for a thick ring ..so i would probably go with a thin one because it would be huge with the band beside it, so do you think a 1.2 ct is too big for my hand? should i go with something like a .7 or .8 or even less? what do you guys think also my ring would have very small diamonds on the sides and on the wedding band.

It sounds like you are looking for something similar to my ring! I also have small fingers (size 5), so I didn't want anything too huge. I went with a .88 carat center stone with an extra .35 carat of micro pave diamonds in the setting. It's beautiful and I love it! I think the diamond should be around 0.75 carat in size. however, my friend at work is getting his fiancee-to-be a diamond sized 0.25..i think she'll be disappointed. what do you think is a good sized diamond?

Most engagement rings are under 1 carat. As soon as you get over that, the cost will sky rocket. Most couples choose to go with a smaller stone and then upgrade for an anniversary. Are you sure that she doesn't know what kind of stone she is getting because she might have agreed to it already. She should be happy to get a ring at all as some couples can't afford the engagement ring, or even the wedding they want. His budget would be taken into consideration also. If .25 is all he can afford right now, then you can't really hold it against him.

For my anniversary/birthday (they are close together ... didn't plan that one right - lol!), my husband wanted to purchase a piece of jewelry. i am wanting to go with a diamond solitaire pendant or diamond stud earrings. i am a stay at home mom so my wardrobe is pretty casual. what size pendant should i go with? what size earrings should i go with? i want them to be noticable, but not gawdy. thanks in advance!

Size is just one thing you should look at - yes, you can get a big diamond, but usually at the cost of color and clarity. Also, look at the band it will be set in - you want something that will match the setting. I've got a 1/4 carat engagement diamond, but I've seen it shine brighter and with more colors than a lot of big diamonds - plus, it matches the type of band I have. Anything larger would look a bit stupid. Best bet - go to a jeweler and have them show you diamonds - check them out under their microscopes - you'll be able to see the differences immediately.

I was thinking nothing bigger then a 1 ct but i think anywhere between .5 and 1 ct. i'm looking to go for near flawless. almost perfect cut and clarity. a few flaws is ok to get a great price on really nice diamonds! as long as it can't be seen from the naked eye.

"near flawless" is way different than "can't bee seen from the naked eye". Use the golden ratio 1.6:1 to get the most attractive look.

I would agree nothing bigger then a 1ct diamond. It all depends on the mounting. Depending on her taste, go with something simple and dainty. If she is a 3 1/4 she probably wouldn't pull off something massive on her tiny finger. Simple solitaire with a nice VS, F, Excellent cut would be beautiful! Good Luck!

I'd say a 1/4 Karat total weight per earring. It will still look pretty but be light enough and not as gawdy as a larger earring.

I'm a half-inch taller and 4 pounds heavier, and I'd be happy to tell you my opinion of this. But honestly, my advice comes from wearing jewelry much more than my size and weight. I inherited a nice diamond necklace (about 1.5 carats) and earrings (about .7 carats each). So, when my husband was trying to figure out my jewelry taste and what to do for an engagement ring, he talked with me about the jewelry I wear vs. the jewelry I don't wear. He learned I don't like big, chunky jewelry. He also learned I thought the earrings were a nice size for me. So, he selected an engagement ring that was .73 carats, just a little bigger than my earrings. So, my advice is this: look into her past and look into her future. Her past: What have you seen her wear on her ears? Specifically, what does she wear when really dressed up (where she will probably wear the diamonds in the future), not what does she wear to work. If she has jewelry she doesn't wear, ask her why not. Her answers could help you. Her future: (or your future) One year is great! If you are looking into the future, perhaps these earrings are a good practice run for an engagement ring. Keep the earrings small and affordable, and you have plenty of room for a larger ring diamond. PS I'd pick the 1/2 t.w. over the 1/3 t.w. I hope this helps! Her frame is similar to mine. I'm 5'2 and 108.
