Here is a sample of my letter to close my savings account. --- i would like to request that my savings account at (bank name) be closed. first name last name social security #: --- --- ---- account number: please mail the remaining account balance to the following address: (my address here) thank you (signature here) --- the bank told me to include ss# name, address and account number in the letter. is this good enough? i don't know how formal it should be. i don't know how to write a business letter/formal letter. the above example shows my information in list form. should the letter be like this instead?: i would like to request that my savings account at united bank be closed. my name is (my name) and my social security number is (number). my account number is (number).

I think this is great; professional and to the point. I prefer the list format because it's easier for someone keying in information, but either one will work.

I have an account in ny, and i need to transfer to tx. the only way to solve this is sending them a letter, about closing my account.

Can you close a bank account by letter or do you have to go to your local branch for this?

I have just closed 2 accounts by letter. I just said that I want to close account No. ???? and I want the balance to be sent to account No. ???? They automatically then cancelled the card, but you might need to cut this up and send it back at the same time. The banks website will have addresses to send correspondence to. Hope this helps.

My reasons are personal and have no bearing on your branch. I just feel that I no longer need to have all these accounts (or this account) at this time. My bank have sent me a letter stating that i have 30 days to pay off my overdraft and they are closing my account due to a breakdown of the customer bank relationship. i have never gone over my overdraft or bounced a cheque i cant afford to pay it back and am absolutely gutted - can they do this i have not even had a warning that anything was wrong

You've never gone over your overdraft but you can't afford to pay it back? That doesn't make any sense. Also, banks explain all of their rights, as well as their reasons for closing your account in the disclosures they give you when you open the account.
