Hi, Ok, so clearly there aren't any direct flights to Devonport. What would help from your end is where you are leaving from exactly. San Fransisco or Los Angeles? There is a difference in price, as well as choice for which airline to fly. From LAX: Qantas, United, VAustralia, Air New Zealand, Delta From San Fransisco: Qantas, United I would look at flights to Melbourne, and then catching a Qantas flight to Devonport - unfortunately the budget airlines don't fly!I had a look on Expedia.com.au, and you can get from LAX to Devonport from AUD$1,287 Los Angeles (LAX) to Melbourne (MEL) Duration: 15hr 35mn QF Qantas Airways Melbourne (MEL) to Devonport (DPO) Duration: 1hr 5mn QF Qantas Airways The price really changes with the date, as i just did some random dates in May. So USD$1,194, but if your planning to go in July, expect a whole lot more! For the same date of travel, prices ranged to AUD$2037. From SFO: San Francisco (SFO) to Los Angeles (LAX) Duration: 1hr 25mn QF Qantas Airways Los Angeles (LAX) to Melbourne (MEL) Duration: 15hr 35mn QF Qantas Airways Melbourne (MEL) to Devonport (DPO) Duration: 1hr 5mn QF Qantas Airways AUD$1,292. So pretty much the same price on these days, but your flying that extra hour from SFO to LAX. I strongly discourage you from flying United to Australia. They fly their old 747's, which don't have personal screens in economy - rather a large projector for the whole cabin. Plus they make a stopover in Sydney, making the very long flight even longer! On Qantas, you could be flying on the A380 - double story aircraft, which i have heard is impeccable! Qantas does do a good job on trans-pacific routes...others i can't be so positive about. :)

My friend say there are nonstop flights, but I don't believe him. I did a little research, and first you'd want to fly to Sydney, then fly to Los Angeles or San Francisco. That's a 13 hour flight. Then from Los Angeles to San Diego is 40 minutes. San Francisco to San Diego is 1 hr 34 min.

It can vary greatly depending on when you want to fly and which airport. A random sample, more than 21 day advance purchase from San Fran will run you between $1500-$2200 depending on schedule. It's a LONG boat trip. First cruise I checked was around $11,000

My friend and i are going to be travelling to the us in 2011 (as part of an around the world trip), and will be stopping in new york for a month, and san fransico for a month. at each of these places we will have the opportunity to fly to any other part of the us and have a look around. what are the sights and attractions you suggest we see while we are there, keeping in mind we are on a budget (the whole trip at the moment not including flights to other places in the us, is going to cost just under $3000!). we are from australia, "country" girls, up for most anything so if you could tell us what you think we should see, that would be greatly appreciated! cheers pts best answer

I live in louisiana. people are very closed minded here, and i love my family very very much but every day i feel as though the life is being sucked from me because i have no one to relate to (i am an atheist lesbian) and i always seem to feel very bitter about people looking down on me or "praying for me" if i don't accept their delusional god. all of the other lesbians that do live here are very masculine, bible thumping, sluts with 10 kids... but that's pretty much all the women here in general. no on in my family has successfully moved to another state, they always end up coming back within a year. if possible i wish i could just move to australia or the uk but i know that would be even harder to do. but as for living in the us i would say that california is way ahead of its time and that i would find others like myself to relate to and start to see the light at the end of the tunnel for my future. i want to ask you if my plan has flaws. i am getting my bachelors right now in visual arts and plan to move to new orleans to attain my masters in visual arts so that i may teach art at the university level. how would i go about moving to about making the move to california? i'm not too sure... would i keep looking for jobs online in california and then if someone is interested in interviewing me, would i just up and fly over there for a day? how much would that cost? isn't the cost of living in general so much higher there than in louisiana? how much would i need to be making a year in order just to live comfortably? because i don't want to be the person that moves away, and then finds it hard, or makes a big mistake, and just quits and moves back right where i started.

You don't actually need to worry about it yet. Focus on completing the Master's degree and use the university's alumni network to help you find a job in CA. Universities have a real interest in helping you find a position because post-graduation "job placement" statistics are something people care about when deciding where to go to school. Good luck!

You're better off where you are now. Sounds strange and contradictory, but in reality, jobs are terrible at this point in time. California has a rising debt, a skyrocketing sales tax, etc. New York is under tight fiscal crisis. Living here has gotten expensive. You can't simply rely on electronic job postings. Those can be scams, watch out. Living abroad isn't easy either. Becoming a citizen of a foreign country is extremely expensive right now, too. If you're bothered by your family, simply move away. I don't think it's completely necessary to call them "closed minded" or "bible thumpers" and what not. You may have difficulty with your degree in getting a job in urban markets. Until the economic situation improves, you're better off staying local. Just get an apartment while working local. Louisiana's cost of living is substantially less than for us urban folk. A lot of people in cities are thinking about moving away...too much job competition. You can also check out "untypical foreign markets." There are places where you might be better off in Latin America. Best of luck.
