My 7 yr old son spends half his time with my ex.when his over he spends alot of time ether on the computer or watching tv with his dad.tv is mostly nick or kid friendly shows but still on the weekend he can spend like 6 or more hours watching tv a day.how much tv a day do you allow your child?now for the video games these games are not educational games but games rated teen and involve monsters and fighting.do you think this is ok for a 7 yr old to play?yes i know its not my house and i don't make the rules when my son goes over to see his dad. i don't plan on saying anything to my ex as he is a good dad and loves his son.i'm just worrying that our son maybe to young for these games and be spending to much time watching tv.i have not said anything to my ex like i said i wanted just to see what eveyone thought of this 1st

Oh no he should follow your rules when is there on the weekends as well just explain to dad you only want to play approiate aged games and not his adult games that is why they have the rating system. It is not a hard request to ask his father to not let his seven year old play violent games. I mean ther are kid games that are violent but they are fake unlike the older people games that are using life like people. Goodluck! also I never let my kids play during the week unless they are good at home and at school and then it is only 30 min on school days weekends i time them at 30 min intervials so they can take turns but I do not make a time only rule I let them have fun as long as they follow the general rules{my boyfriends kids come over on the weekends and when their mother brought this up to him he knew it wasn't a crazy request either because he is a good dad as well}

As time has passed during the centuries there has now come a time when children have started becoming more inclined towards gaming then anything else. you may think game addiction is not a serious problem, but it can destroy peoples lives. this addiction has lead to loss of jobs, relationships and has even broken apart families. when you and your friends were playing video games and is always wanting to play the newest games. have you ever thought of this as a disease or addiction? there are many symptoms when you may or may not have a game addiction. for example “lack of control”, if you were unable to control the time you have on a computer or any gaming device and spends 15 to 20 minutes, but always extends the time to several hours. negative impact on other areas of life, if you spend a large amount of time on a computer or video game console and you are constantly spending the amount of time each day. you will begin to not be aware of your distant between your family and friends, homework may go unfinished, causing grades to slip. in other serious situation, some teens, for example may choose video games rather then taking a shower. the most important signs you see from a friend, family member, or yourself with a game addiction is if when you start playing a game and are happy most of the time, until you are no longer allowed to play and eventually have to stop, you begin to be angry or upset. if you ever kept thinking about going online or playing when you are suppose to be focusing on more important situations. or when you spend more time on your computer or video game controller, then spending time with your friends. these warning signs will provide your parents, friends, and other family member to look for if they are concerned about someone’s use of video, computer, or internet games. as technology moves forward, so does graphic violent nature of the video games. violent games are most addictive and cause the most issues, then any other kind of game. this is one of the biggest problems because out of the most school shootings in recent years have been most gamers causing the shooting, there choice of games were dark and violent. in 1980 they released sony playstation, and thats when violence became an issue and threw the years while the graphics became lifelike, the more violent games, the more violent behavior. in order to win in violent games you have to be the aggressor. so rather then watching the violence on television, its like committing the violent acts. most researchers acknowledge that this kind of active participation affects a person's thought patterns, at least in the short term. another factor that concerns both researchers and parents is that violence in video games is often rewarded rather than punished. in army and sniper games, players "level up" based in part on how many people they kill. if played frequently enough, games like this can skew a young person's perception of violence and its consequences. parents should realize the amount of time their children spend gaming and watch closely for any negative effects. video games are designed to be addictive, most designers make the game challenging, which allow players to achieve small accomplishments to keep playing. its like gambling which will allow players to have small "wins” that keep them playing. there are several hook’s that make a game addictive. for example high scores, whether trying out the latest edition of grand theft auto or haven’t played a game since pac-man, the high score is the most popular hook. when trying to beat the high score it can keep a player playing for hours. beating the game is another hook, this makes most people play for days. role playing, allow players to do more than just play they get to actually create the characters in the game and go on an adventure that's somewhat unique to that character. consequently, there's an emotional attachment to the character, and the story makes it much harder to stop playing. most people like to spend there spare time playing games, while others there friends, family, school, and even personal hygiene are neglected as nearly every spare moment is spent playing games. so yeah thats my speech, what do i write for the ending?

I really don't know all i know is that you hit some key problems but some were kinda off, yeah some teens cant control there play time but most can, some do spend hours on end playing but most don't and yes games like grand theft auto 4 have drug,sex,and violence but its the parents job to control that not society, and when you say that people are rewarded by killing to level up, well people aren't as obsessed about leveling up as you think they are. the awards aren't like the nicotine tobacco companies add to "stay hooked". and if you think that online gaming all about "killing the enemy" its not.i take it more as a kinda paintball game mentality. this is what i say after every game"good game yall" of course it doesn't always go like that but thats how the real players should do it. honestly the foul language is probably the biggest problem and thats why online games should be for kids about 13 and over. and the last thing, the school shootings that have been happening is mostly because teens are able to get there hands on a gun that is the parents fault, you could say that video games teach kids/teens how to accurately handle and shoot a gun but really, thats not the problem they could find that out without video games (most don't know even with video games), the problem is that they could get ahold of one. if you writhing this for a school project or something then go ahead get a 100 but if this is for a meeting or something i really don't think its an accurate display of reality.

We don't play many video games in our house (work and homework just don't leave time) - but we have a ps2 and every christmas i get them a game or two and they spend a chunk of the holiday break playing them. any suggestions? the final fantasy looks great - and i think they'd both relate to it - but it also looks hard and probably too violent for our daughter. i'd like to get the best game out there that's appropriate for her and fun for dad too. she's just turned 12 so some teen rated games might be okay - but up until now we've stuck with the "e" for everyone. thanks for any input you might have!

Final Fantasy games are an great choice. It is a fantasy Role Play and it cause s them to think a little. Since it is turn base it is not really violent over some other games. There is no blood in Final Fantasy games. once defeated, the creature disappears. Most team games are going to have some fighting in them for a a PS2 game so there is not real way around it. A question you want to ask is if you want games for your 12 year old to play buy herself or with the family. Here are a couple of my suggestions. Well i'm 16 years old and i like to read a lot and play video games. i dont like to hang out with a lot of teens my age and when it comes to the weekend i always feel like just being home. i also spend my time with my mom and doing chores. i guess what my question is..is it bad that i spend most of my time doing this?

No, it is not bad. You will spend more time with people your own age as you get older. Enjoy the time with your mom because you can never get that time back again. Lead your life as you like it. Everyone is different.

The same things American teens do, I suppose, with one exception: Young males play soccer instead of baseball, and every village have their soccer club, just like American teens might play baseball after school. There's also another German specialty, that's the "Schützenverein", or "arms club". Many young people join them to get the allowance to own guns, as our laws are very restrictive on that. You have to obtain a licence and proof that you are a club member, and you're not allowed to have a gun with you or in your car unless you're on the way to a club meeting or back from it. (Needless to say that some people ignore that rule, but when caught, fines are heavy, and you risk that all firearms you once legally possessed will be confiscated.) Carrying sharp ammo with the gun is strictly outlawed, unless you're a hunter with a licence or otherwise protected by the law. Young people living in the countryside may also join the "Freiwillige Feuerwehr", the "volontary fire brigade". As in small villages there is no state service to that, they rely on volunteers, but don't put the youngsters into "hot action". They're trained for the basic skills in case a fire should occur. For most of young people, being a "fire brigadeer" is lots of fun; but there comes the day when they see their first burnt body, and that's where the fun ends. --- @sads, I know that, but I wanted to simplify things a bit for American readers, as many of them don't understand the concept of a "Schützenverein" and German gun laws. Maybe it was TOO simplified, I admit. I'm a member of a Schützenverein myself, but it's hard to explain to someone who doesn't know German legislation, and even more so with my limited knowledge of English.

My 8 year old son spends a lot of time playing video games with his friends that come over. i want to encourage other things to do while the kids are at my house. we have a small house, but a relatively large yard. any suggestions for things to entertain the 8-13 year old age group without it looking like mom's idea?

Ive been working at this job for about...a year now, and we just had a new batch of employees come in about a month ago, i did not really care until i saw her. she is absolutely gorgeous. at lunch she always(as in everyday) sits near me or comes to my work space to talk, or bring me coffee, i've never been the type of person who was good with girls, hell i spent most of my teen life playing video games, i don't know what the **** to do and im being as honest as possible, when she talks to me i get this warm feeling, i don't know how to explain it but it feels freaking good, i can't let this slip away, but i don't know how to approach her, please just give me a tip, you give a man a fish he'll eat for a day, you teach him how to fish he'll never go hungry. i'm not a bad looking guy, i still have some of my nerdy ways (playing video games still, about it) and i fear my lack of female experience in highschool has brought my downfall.. i am only 22, will be 23 next april

Well if you get talking to her and stuff and you know what she likes to do on her free time, ask that, SINCE YOUR NOT DOING ANYTHING *ahem screwthevideogamesfor2seconds*, that you'd like to hang out. this could be going to the movies, the beach..anythingggg. Dude, be yourself, but be fun. You don't have to try hard, just talk about everyday things...get her to laugh, that's important. If you form a solid friendship, somethings bound to happen, but you gotta spend your free time with her also. In my opinion, the easiest way to start that off is to ask her out for dinner...yeah, like a date. in a way. Have fun with her, like go to a local Fair, or walk around town and get icecream or whatever..i dunno what's in ur town. Smile a damn-lot, like you prob already do, and for god's sake look in her eyes when you talk to her, and try to hold it! Try to be fun. I dunno...freakin-A dude, i'm running out of ideas on the spot so just think of something local and fun. damn. Haha, best of luck to you ;D ...hope everything turns out ok.

Do you know an "adam"? today i was told about a young man who is a friend of my daughter's. this young man, who i am going to call adam for simplicity's sake, is terribly intelligent. he can talk about astronomy and science, he is good at math. adam is bright and capable of doing anything. adam is also what i call a leader. his friends will stick up for him even when he is wrong, not because they are such good friends but because he has the ability to convince them that he is not wrong. people in his circle of friends tend to want to be like him, they listen to his advice, and they do things he asks them to. adam has the ability and talent to go far in this life and really make something of himself. i'm not really sure of his age but i know he is in his very early 20s and like many young men of his age group he is doing nothing with all this talent. adam instead chooses to spend his days doing drugs and playing video games. he spends his nights partying and living it up, so to speak. he has a girlfriend who he appears to care nothing for and who he regularly "puts in her place". he has a child who he is also taking care of and i assume loves. he lives with them but they do not act as one would hope a young family would. adam has responsibilities and chooses to act irresponsibly. he has all this intelligence and ability but does nothing with it. the reason i am telling you this story is because the more i look at the young people in our society today the more frightened i become. so many of our youth are running around lost. they, like adam, seem to simply not care. has the world treated them too good or so badly that they have lost the ability to care about their own lives and the lives of those they affect. more and more young men of this age group are sitting at home in front of their televisions playing games all day instead of bettering themselves or going to work. they have no vision and if they do have dreams they do not have the drive to make any attempt at achieving them. i believe one of the major problems in our society is the school system itself. if you manage to graduate high school, which is a feat in and of itself now adays, then by the time you are out you certainly do not want to continue because of how awful school was for you. this is not to say that there are not kids who go on to college, of course there are, but they are rapidly decreasing in number. we must ask ourselves why this is. our school system does not work folks. what will have to happen before we realize this and do something about it. by high school kids are ready for more than what we give them. i do not mean academically, although in some cases this is also true, but emotionally and in the way of treatment. most teachers are still treating high school students like toddlers. kids are growing up much faster in today's society and are not being treated like young adults in our high schools. for instance, if a teacher expects to be respected then should they not be treating our children with a modecom of respect to teach what respect is. if a teacher cannot act respectfully then how can we expect our children to simply give respect automatically. by the time our kids our teens they understand respect but they also are far to smart to give undeserved respect simply because someone is older or has a title like teacher. by the time a child reaches his or her teen years it takes a little more than "because i said so". of course this cannot be the only reason we have such unmotivated youth. some of it is parents are not teaching what it means to be an adult. my oldest son got a job when he was 14 and soon my youngest will as well. they both know the importance of a hard days work and the reward of a well earned check at the end of the week. they also have learned how rewarding it is to save your own money to buy the things you want and have them truly be yours because you earned them. this cannot be said for all teens anymore. there was a time when most teenagers went out and got jobs. it was just what was done. those days are long gone. now only a handful of today's youth are doing this. some of this is because of parenting and some is because of the amount of homework schools are giving which makes it impossible to do anything outside of school and homework. we must get control of this. we must motivate our youth. we must teach responsibility and goal setting. i fear if we do not we will soon be supporting an entire generation of homeless and needlessly on welfare familys. things have to change, with our schools, with the older generation being good role models, with the older generation being mentors, and with the youth who are right now doing nothing. those of you are like adam.... you have a choice. you can allow yourselves to stay your course and do nothing or you can rise above what the synics around you expect and go get educated or get jobs. show the older generation they are wrong about you. let them know you have intelligence and skills. show yourself what you are made of. you might be suprised at how proud of yourself you become with even the smallest of accomplishments. i can tell you that nothing can happen if you do not try, bad or good. you will not become rich overnight either way but at least if you make an effort, then you have begun your journey to your dreams. just so we are clear on this age group i'm talking about 18 - 25 year olds. do you really believe at this age level the parents are still responsible? and if they didn't do the job of teaching responsibility at a younger age do you think they will bother now? or do you think a young person can turn out like this even when taught responsibility during youth?

I can see you're passionate about this and you do make some good points. It really is an up hill battle trying to figure out why young adults refuse to contribute to society and take personal responsibility for themselves. I suggest not to dwell on the Adams in society but rather concentrate on the youth that ARE making a difference. We don't hear enough about about these young people and it's a shame. We tend to forget they're out there and by doing so, theses achievers are not getting the attention they rightly deserve. Honestly. For every Adam there is a young man or woman who takes full advantage of their talents. Seek these folks out and give them the encouragement and praise. Your efforts will be greatly appreciated.
