A D-G range is good for a white gold or platinum ring. A diamond with a D-J color is good for yellow gold rings. Don`t ever buy a diamond that is not certified. A diamond certificate is the only way to verify quality. Carat weight (Diamond size): Once you have decided on a color and clarity grade, you should match the diamond size by your price range. For color go from E-H, the difference from D to E is nothing. Anything worse than H color starts to look yellow to me. For cut, either very good or ideal, it makes a big difference in how shiny it is. For clarity I think anything better than SI2 is fine. When I was looking I couldn`t tell much of a difference between the clarities until I got down to the SI2 range. For carat, obviously that`s completely up to your budget. Are you looking to get her a single diamond. Or a ring with multiple diamonds. I would probably change my suggestions based on that. I purchased a 2.05 ct round SI2 J_K color diamond. I paid 3800.00 for it. Did I get a good deal? I should also mention it was already set in a white gold casting. It did not have a certification.

We went shopping at zales, and i picked out the one i wanted, it was $14,000. i turned away for a few minutes still browsing and a few weeks later, he gave me a ring... sweet, huh... but the metal in some places looks tarnished, which i think he may have done to fake people out cause $14,000 is a freakin lot of money for a ring, even i know that..... so the ring has one big stone in the middle two smaller on each side of the big one, and yet two smaller still ,,so two small two medium and one big one... he told me tho that a diamond doesn't sparkle in rainbow colors... but my bro said it looks real and he bought his wife a diamond ring. i have gotten lots of mixed opinions about it, and people actually say it seems real, im dying to know the truth!

Hold it to your mouth and breathe on it like you're trying to steam it up. If it doesn't steam, it's real. If it holds the steam...it's not. The best way though, is to take it to a real jeweler. Just walk in and ask them to look at it and tell you. You won't be charged because you're not trying to have it appraised...you just want to know if it's real or not. Even if it isn't real...just keep in mind that he got the ring for you because he was trying to make you happy. Not everyone can afford a ring that expensive...but it sounds his heart was in the right place whether the stone is real or not.

In the past i've indicated number of times that the ring is too loose on her finger so she will need to go to a jeweler to fix it but was never done. i am angry for this reason. i feel the ring carries a meaning that is much greater than its monetary value.

I'm going with the others and hoping you had it insured. If you did, you should be able to get another one. I know it won't be the same one and the other one had a lot of meaning. But this one will too. Perhaps she felt the same about the meaning and was afraid to let it go (or didn't want to because she liked having it on her finger) and that's why she didn't get it properly sized. At this time, being mad at her isn't going to solve anything. She is probably just a upset as you are and hearing you say that you told her to get it sized only makes her feel worse. You've made your point, she feels horrible and knows you're right. Hopefully, she has learned her lesson and if you go about this part right, you should have some bonus for future issues. When you go to get a new ring, either get it sized properly at the time (most jewelers should allow you to size for free if you bought it there and if they don't , negotiate that because they're getting a good sale and should be able to put in the 15 minutes of work) or have it sized immediately after. For a temporary fix in future situations, a ring guard is a cheap fix that will last a couple months. You can also usually negotiate rush jobs with jewelers if you're polite and offer to make an appointment, They will charge you extra, but this is an option if you're afraid to leave the ring any where. But for her peace of mind, most jewelers reputations are based on their customers and your ring isn't worth their career, so they won't be switching out your diamonds. Let her know that information to help avoid future problems.
