From what I have found out, credti card companies and other entities can forward your bad credit information to the country you live in , making it hard to obtain housing, credit cards, etc in the country you move. I don`t know how widely practiced this is, but it`s something to think about.

If someone has let's say a bad credit history in canada, could this somehow affect the credit rating in the united states? is there such a thing as an international credit report?

Generally, it's a clean slate from country to country, however in the current economic climate, no credit can be just as confining as bad credit. Also, depending on your age, some banks, landlords, etc., might be suspicious if you apply for credit/housing and have nothing on your history to report.

I have 2 credit cards in uk and owning them few hundreds pounds and sometimes missed the payment. if i stop paying it and leaving these debts behind and back to my home country . will this bad credits affect me in my home country? i understand som banks are international organizations but like baclays bank. there is no barclays bank in my country and all the details they have about me is my details in uk. is that mean i can have a fresh credit history when i'm back to my home country?

They *will* find you. It may take time but most banks/credit card companies are international organisations. All it takes is for it to go to a debt collector, and then a solicitor. They'll appoint a solicitor wherever you are and it'll go on. Talk to them, arrange a monthly payment you can afford and go from there. They are surprisingly nice if you tell them your situation.

Not generally, no. There is no such thing as a 'universal' credit score, that's absurd. In the US your social security number is what is used for obtaining credit and is THE main identifier for your credit reports . No other country has social security numbers, so your credt in the US would NOT go anywhere else. If in another country you would basically be starting over.

I was wondering if anyone knew if the current state of our country and the world market crashing affects our credit scores at all? i was curious because my sons credit report is not bad at all, one negative and his score has not been raising. i have about 35k in bad debt on my report yet my score is the same as my sons. so could our current situation be affecting scores in general all across the country?

I was not going to answer this but after seeing money madams answer I have to correct two things. First the correct way credit scores are calculated is as follows; 1. Payment history 35% 2. Time in bureau 15% 3. Types of credit 10% 4. New credit 10% 5. Debt to credit ratio 30% You will notice there is no mention of debt to income this is because this ratio has nothing what so ever to do with credit scores it's your debt to credit ratio that counts. Second FICO 2008 has not been put into use yet they got so much flack about authorized users that they backed off so as of now AU's can still benefit score wise.

I haven't been paying my credit card bills in my country since i have been here in the us for 10 months, unemployed while waiting for my green card based on petition from my us citizen husband. i recently received notice of legal action if i don't settle it. i will be here for good, and will be using my married name, would it affect my future credit score here in the us? do they have jurisdiction to come after me?

The US banks use three credit agencies, trans union equifax and expeian<sp?> they use people's ssn numbers or tax id numbers to track people so as long as its not a jumbo amount and the bank leanding you the money dosent check your home country you should be fine for other tips and tricks and maybe a laugh or two check this out http://rcwhiteky.blogspot.com

My husband a us citizen will be sponsoring his brother in the future, (he has applied for a green card for his brother) but i'm worried that since his brother has bad credit it will affect us or make us responsible to pay his debts...do you know if this will happen. his brother owned a house and had like 3-4 credit cards and then just left the country and left everything without paying. my husband had already filed a petition which won't come thru in a couple of more years. will this affect us in any way since we will have to provide a support letter i believe...any truthful and related answers will help. thank you in advance..

No. Personal debt such as loans, mortgage payments etc will never be a burden on you or your husband. You or your husband will only be financial responsible if he needs federal or state financial assistance such as medicare, unemployment etc.

Do other countries have the same credit rating systems as the us? i am moving to london in the next month, and i would love to buy rather than rent housing. however, my us credit rating is too low to obtain a loan. will i have a somewhat clean slate in the uk?

You have a choice between having NO credit or having bad credit. So I would say "yes" , it will affect you either way.

Lived in ireland for 5 years , never even had a ticket ! in the last few month i ran into credit card problems and left the country with 3800 euro in debit and a utility bill of 300 euro unpaid. i need a police clearance certificate , does this history affect my police clearance ??

It ought to. All of us responsible people are being overcharged to compensate for your irresponsibility. Is that the sort of character we need on our policing force ? I dare say "not". Clear up your past indiscretions...you will feel a lot better about it. Or at least thats what your mother told me to tell you.

I have about 80k debt in canada, i am a citizen (credit cards + business loans). i have a green card and am moving to the u.s. soon. will my bad credit in canada affect me in the us? if i have a green card they wouldn't assume i just immigrated from any country for that matter, and even if they did they couldn't check canadian credit as the companies are not linked, but just subsidiaries. so what do you think? i am coming back to canada in a few years for pension too.

No you won't have to pay that back unless you go back to Canada. You could even file for bankruptcy pay the small fraction move to the US and wait for your credit to get better at home.

Countries per se don't exchange credit ratings, but international companies within those countries certainly do. If you have a bad rating in Canada, Visa/American Express/Master Card know all about it. And if you try to use your credit in Australia through any of these companies, the Aussie branch will certainly be aware of your poor credit rating. The world gets smaller day by day.....
